News (up)

Grading of makeup exams is finished.
Find all the information regarding the first makeup exam under the new menu item "Makeup Exam 1 Online". It is strongly advised to read this information well before the start of the exam. At the bottom of that page you find a link to the actual exam environment where you can download the exam paper and upload your work. This is now deactivated but will be activated during the exam.
The makeup exams will take place online. Please make sure that you are able to download and print the exam papers as well as upload your solutions. The process will be the same as for the main exam. Additional information will be made available soon.
Dates for makeup exams have been scheduled on September 18th and 25th. See «Dates». We are currently planning for exams with physical presence at Währingerstraße 29. But according to the development of the Corona situation it is possible that an online setting has to be used again. We will inform you as soon as possible.
Assessment is completed. All students have been assessed. Eventual improvements by participating in makeup tests will lead to a correction in your transcript of records.
Find all the information regarding the online exam under the new menu item "Online Theoretical Exam". It is strongly advised to read this information well before the start of the exam. At the bottom of that page you find a link to the actual exam environment where you can download the exam paper and upload your work. This is now deactivated but will be activated during the exam.
Due to the current situation of the shutdown of presence lectures at the University of Vienna till end of semester, we have to do some additional slight modifications of our planned schedule of the DBS lectures.
First of all, as stated already, we are convinced that there will not be disadvantages for you, the students.

Lectures: (up)

From today’s point of view, there are no modifications to the time schedule. However, due to the situation that no presence lectures are allowed, we will switch the lectures to reading mode.
All lectures are available and downloadable from the CEWebS site. According to our original plan (https://cewebs.cs.univie.ac.at/DBS/ss20/index.php?t=dates) for each lecture a start date is given, when the lectures have to be processed (read and comprehended) by students, e.g. lecture “Relational Model” starts on 21.04.2020. Until the next lecture the students are advised, if necessary, to use the forum to pose questions on unclear or ambiguous topics. We will answer these questions in timely fashion.
This proposed process aims to cluster questions and answers related to the planned sequence of lecture topics. Of course, questions on anything can be raised anytime.

Practical Lessons: (up)

There are no modifications to the deadlines and requirements of the project’s milestones. You can present worksheets and milestones in the online classes. Please, inform Benedikt Pittl immediately, if you cannot attend any online class (bad internet connection…).

We are sorry that we had to do these modifications, but we are forced by the situation and have to follow the guidelines of the University.

We wish you all the best, and stay safe and healthy.

The deadline for deregistration from the course was extended until 30.04.
The schedule for the course has been updated due to university lockdown. See «schedule updates». Please use the forum if you have any questions. Make sure to check this site regularly. We will post new information here as it becomes available.

Students who were not yet present and did not sign in the lists will not be deregistered. They will be given an opportunity to sign when the university restarts teaching with physical presence.

General information (up)

Classification (up)

The course is an optional part covering 6 ECTS of the core-programme CO-INF2 for the study of Master Computational Sience (910).

Goals (up)

Students develop knowledge of the theoretical foundations of database systems and learn to program applications with integration of a relational database.

Prerequistes (up)

Some basic understanding of modeling, algorithms and data structures is assumed. Lacking knowledge can eventually be easily acquired by self study.

Method and Assessment (up)

The theoretical lectures cover the fundamentals of database systems and offer the knowledge needed for the development of a small application with an integrated database which is the project part of the practical classes.

The topics covered are:
- Introduction, Basic Terms and Presentations
- Fundamentals of Logical Data Organization, Relational Model
- Database Languages (focus SQL)
- Integrity and Security
- Conceptual Modeling
- Physical Data Organization, Memory-, File- and Index-Structures
- Query Processing and Optimization
- Transactions and Recovery
- Programming with Database Systems

In each part (theoretical and practical) there is a maximum of 50 marks achievable. The grade is derived from the sum of the two parts (i.e. a maximum of 100 marks in total).

There are three possibilities to achieve marks:
- presentation of solved homework tasks and participation in the practical part (20 marks max. - upper limit incl. bonus points)
- hand in and presentation of a self developed project (30 marks max. - upper limit incl. bonus points)
- theoretical test (no aids allowed, 50 marks max.)

Knockout criteria (up)

- presence in the practical lessons
- hand in and presentation of a project
- at least 15 marks at the theoretical test

Grading (up)

If the knockout criteria are not fulfilled, the grade is "Nicht genügend (5)". Otherwise the grade is calculated from the total amount of marks achieved according to the following table

Grading Scale (up)

Marks
Grade
>= 87,5
sehr gut (1)
>= 75
gut (2)
>= 62,5
befriedigend (3)
>= 50
genügend (4)
< 50
