Structure and activities
Besides encounter, the following activities were noted on the white-board, based on participants' reaction sheets:
- active listening techniques, listening for feelings
- conflict - a person-centered approach to conflict
- personal evaluation of each other
- encounter-experiential questionnaire (input by facilitator)
Actual structure and activities in 3rd block
Thursday:
- Reaction sheets - conversation about participants' perceptions and proposals
- seminar-thesis - due-date and expected content, literature
- active listening case - what if a colleague doesn't talk and rather avoids social contact?
- finding a procedure for personal evaluation
- a person evaluates himself/herself regarding openness/congruence, empathic understanding, acceptance
- others tell him/her how they perceive this person, based (primarily) on experience in the course
- personal evaluations (2 rounds with 3 people per round)
Friday:
- Facilitator waits for participants to see how they want to proceed
- participants decidedly want to continue with personal evaluation and feedback, and do it as thoroughly as the day before- lunch break and filling out of questionnaires (encounter-experiential questionnaire and feeling of community)
- Participants make plans for continuing the meetings, in order to have more of this kind of communication
- Renate wanted to provide the case: Do encounter groups have space at universities? However, the plan to continue the meetings provided an implicit answer.
- Participant's case: False promises in renting an apartment
- Final reflection, based on three issues:
- Any significant experience or insight you're taking with you?
- Effects of person-centered courses on your interpersonal relationships
- Your perception of group-facilitation and personal feedback to the facilitator
