• why can't tables contain links? if a link is a connection between two items and both columms and rows represent items, a filled cell could indicate a connection. whereas an empty cell indicates no connection. in general, i dont understand how cell fits into the group of item, attribute and link. what is the difference between link and cell? 

• Gibt es einen groessen Unterschied zwischen dem Task Overview und Zoom? 

• Bzgl. "Query: Identify, Compare or Summarize", meine Frage zieht auf das "or" in der Formulierung ab, denn so wie ich das auf den ersten Blick sehe haben diese drei Tasks eine Abhängigkeit untereinander, z.B. eine "summarize" wird in seiner Implementierung immer auf ein "compare" und ein "identify" angewiesen sein. 

• Bzgl. "Semantics: Temporal Attributes", Zitat "…requires external knowledge about the nature of the dataset and cannot be made purely from type information.", in wie fern kann man hier vorgehen um sicherzustellen, ob es eine zeitliche Abhängigkeit/Komponente gibt bzw. ob diese benötigt wird? Wäre es nicht einfacher gleich von Anfang an für alle Attribute mit möglichem temporalen Aspekt diesen mit einzuplanen? 

• Bzgl. "Analyzing an existing vis system", Zitat "…understanding how the original designer chose to transform the given dataset should be a cornerstone of your analysis.", in wie fern lässt sich diese Aussage auf real-life Anwendugen anwenden, ich meine es klingt so als müsste man sich für die "reine" Anwendung eines bestehenden vis Systems sehr tief in die Materie einarbeiten (zahlt sich das überhaupt aus)? 

• Besonders in Kapitel 3 „How“ stellt sich jedoch die Frage, inwieweit der Prozess des Visualisierens in diese Semantik eingreift. Kann durch Visualisierung die Bedeutung von Daten beeinflusst oder sogar verändert werden? 

• Ist es möglich, Daten ohne den Hintergrund der Nutzung zu visualisieren? Ist die Einteilung in present/discover/enjoy nicht zu eng? 

• What sorts of abstract language that's independent of the low-level details of the interface can be used by finding out how an idion is designed? 

• How can you specify whether the goal of a vis tool is to only help the user consume information, or actively produce it? 

• Why is it ncessary for a dataset often to be transformed beyond its original state in order to create a visual encoding that can solve the desired problem? 

• Is a strict distinction between exploration and presentation viable (page 21)? It is more likely that all users, including the presenter herself, discover new information along the way. 

• Was bedeutet “Strahler Numbers” auf Seite 42 bei Punkt 3.4.1 

• "In which cases is the presenter designer, in which cases is the presenter user of the vis system?" and "In 2.3.1.1 Present, at the end of the first paragraph, the author writes: „In some cases the presenter is the designer of the vis system and the audience is its users; in other cases the presenter is the user of a vis system who presents results to others.“ What exactly is the difference here, except that in the second case thepresenter is not the designer?" 

• Does "encode" from "how?" vis idiom include process of rendering? 

• Welche Prinzipien sind wichtig für die Auswahl der Algorithmen in Visualisierungsprozess? 

• Isn't the 'introduce' aspect of 'how' much less part of the visualization than the science/measurement the data is built on? 

• In Kapitel 2 wird die Suchart „locate“ beschrieben, mich würde interessieren ob man dann von Tools wie Google Maps und Google Earth auch noch als Visualisierungen bezeichnen kann? 

• Zu Chapter 3 – Im Bereich der VIS gibt es viele Möglichkeiten zu designen, mir ist aufgefallen das sich diese aber vor allem was Farben angeht stark von denen aus dem Webdesign-Bereich unterscheiden. Was würde man denn bei einer Visualisierung die man fürs Web baut dann eher gewichten – Daten möglichst bunt (also unterscheidbar) zu machen oder sich eher an die Webdesign-Designregeln wenn man sie so nennen kann halten und wenig Farben verwenden?

• […] Das Buch ist abgesehen von eventuellen Sprachbarrieren gut zu lesen. Frau Munzner pflegt einen sehr interessanten Schreibstil, da sie ein leicht verständliches Englisch verwendet und es ermöglicht den Text zu verstehen, selbst wenn man keinen IT-Background hat. Sie verwendet viele Beispiele die wirklich zum besseren Verständnis beitragen. Auch ihr Vokabular ist recht einfach gewählt und nicht von fachchinesischen Ausdrücken dominiert. Sehr interessant finde ich auch ihre Anmerkungen zu Synonymen. 
   
• […] The chapters are very nicely written. I especially like the way to explain most of the stuff by using practical examples, so that it is easy to understand everything and follow the central theme. 
   
• Die Diagramme sind teilweise etwas minimalistisch. Es werden im Text manchmal verschiedene Schriftarten benutzt, was für die Lesbarkeit nicht gut ist. 
   
• Figure 2.7 appears to be a recapitulation of the theory of relational database theory, which may be unnecessary, and insufficient in this context. 
   
• The appendix about the data abstraction should be re-integrated in the current flow (it used to be like that in the draft from last year, I believe). I felt somehow lost without the additional information from the appendix. Make Brehmer and Munzners A Multi-Level Typology of Abstract Visualization Tasks an required read for the next time. It is well written and actually helps to understand some of the contents in chapter 2 better. The entire examples sections (currently 3.4) needs an overhaul. Examples are too complex to be described in this briefness, even with the provided visual aids. They also seem to be a little bit detached from the derive-explanations, despite the fact that they should actually help to clarify / exemplify exactly these explanations. 
   
• On the page 26 the author presents "what?" model. I find here many similarities with the Entitity Relatonship Model,which is commonly used in relational databases.I wonder if "what?" model can be interpreteted as an entity from the ERM with its relationships,attributes,etc. or perhaps is it not enough abstract? 
   
  *The presented analysis framework is an interesting thing in theory, but I don't see myself ever applying it in practice. I do not agree with the hierarchical levels of information about an attribute in figure 2.8. Range can be derived from min/max, but not the other way around, trends and patterns do not require a distribution, anomalies can be identified with just the use of a distribution, etc.. 
   
• […] The overall writing style is pretty good, it's easy to read and easy to understand. It is absolutely not so techy as expected - very good! 
   
• […] Weiters finde ich es sehr gut, dass der Text mit vielen verständlichen Grafiken/Abbildungen ergänzt wird. Das lockert die Materie auf und lädt den Leser zum Weiterlesen ein. 
   
• Generally in these two chapters there is a lot of information, that I do already know, also I think that these techniques I use subliminally. But it is very interesting to finally get the purpose behind this informations and techniques. Also I thing in some cases (e.g 2.4.4), there is too much information on that should be clear for most people already.
