Abstract

Ubiquitous computing is widely considered a "hot topic": 
interdisciplinary in nature and using techniques and methods ranging from low-level communication and sensing to high-level data mining and user interaction, it tries to build systems centred around users and their needs. In this course, students should become familiar with the core aspects of ubiquitous computing (also called pervasive computing) and learn to design ubiquitous systems.

Assessment

Required coursework will be active participation during the lectures as well as two integrated seminars and one practical. Students will write a short seminar paper (ca. 4 pages) describing a select problem and an approach to solving it using ubiquitous computing techniques. In the practical session, students will get acquainted with a location system and implement a small application as home work. 
Theoretical parts will be assessed with a written examination at the end of 
the course. 

Requirements

No specific courses need to be completed before taking this course, but Java skills and general knowledge of Internet and networking protocols and mobile computing are required.

English 
The course will be held primarily in English, but student coursework may optionally be submitted in German (seminar paper, home work, and written exam).
